First and most importantly, I ask that we all continue to be present in prayer with Fr. Bruce during his transition. I am glad that he is receiving the level of care he needs, yet we do miss him dearly. Hopefully, he’ll be able to come back for a visit in the future when his condition stabilizes.
You may have noticed all the work trucks around the church. They are here for the much-awaited HVAC installation. This is a massive project, costing about $590,000, replacing the original air handling units in the basement of the church along with the associated pumps, pipes and controls. Their work should not affect sanctuary and atrium operations for the new few weeks. However, we will need to celebrate weekend Masses in Ignatius Hall from mid-July to mid-August when they demolish and replace the existing units.
Fortunately, we received an extremely generous $600,000 bequest from Joan Gulledge, which allowed us to begin this project without taking out a loan. What a gift! God has been good to us. If any of you are doing estate planning now, please consider Saint Raphael the Archangel Parish. You just might save the sanity of a future pastor.
Additionally, you may be wondering about the white plastic pipes on the exterior of the church. When the outside cooling tower was replaced two years ago (a $58,000 investment), the original metal pipes connecting it to the basement HVAC system were not replaced. They recently burst and we literally flushed $12,000 in water overage down the drain. Fortunately, the City of Raleigh has credited us $10,000 of that loss. The PVC pipes you see are a temporary solution. Unfortunately, the permanent solution is costly and we are assessing different options.
As you know, our campus is aging and needed maintenance was deferred for years, leading to situations like this. Your financial support for maintenance and capital expenditures is vital to sustaining our parish mission.
In an attempt to simplify online giving we are launching a new Realm eGiving platform on July 1. I ask you and your family to explore the site and discern your level of support. I can tell you that I personally am doing everything I can to build up our parish. Yet my efforts won’t get us anywhere unless we are all in it together.
Realm eGiving offers numerous advantages for us as a parish:
June 30 will mark my 1-year anniversary as your pastor. We have accomplished a lot together. Challenges remain, but so too does great potential. May Saint Raphael the Archangel continue to accompany us on this eventful journey.
Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam!
