Hello Saint Raphael,

I’m writing to let you know that this summer I’ll be finishing my time as pastor here, I’ll be receiving my next mission as a Jesuit, and a new pastor has been missioned to St. Raphael.

The reasons for this change are two-fold. One is to best care for St. Raphael (what we Jesuits call cura apostolica, care for the apostolate).  As you look to the future as a parish, the new pastor will bring some notable gifts and experience, different from my own, that can be of particular help to St. Raphael in your next steps as a parish.  Another reason is to care for me (what’s called cura personalis or care for the person, which is also one of St. Raphael’s Ignatian values.)  I’ve been given the gift to serve as pastor for eight years, which has been a tremendous privilege and blessing.  But truth be told, the past several years in particular have brought unprecedented challenges in leadership, and I could use a little rest!   I’m also hoping to have more time to spend with my family.  I thank you all again in particular for your prayers over the past year for my father, who continues to recover well from his bout with cancer.  

I’m sure you have a lot of questions, most notably, “Who will be our next pastor?” I’m pleased to let you know that Fr. Tom Simisky, SJ will begin as the new pastor on June 30, 2022.  Many of you will remember Fr. Tom from the three months he spent assisting at St. Raphael last summer.  I know even from that short time working with him that his teaching, leadership, and global experiences will be a benefit to St. Raphael as you take the next steps forward, following Jesus as his passionate disciples.  I’m excited to see God work through him as your next pastor.  It looks like Fr. Tom and I will have the chance to spend the last week or so of June on campus, to work together and make for a smooth transition.  You can find a more in-depth bio for Fr. My next long term mission as a Jesuit is still to be determined. It looks like for the first six months of the ‘22-23 year, I’ll have some time of sabbatical for rest, for more extended and quiet prayer and reflection, to do some direct pastoral work assisting at parishes and retreat houses, and to work on a few other projects, including perhaps - exciting for me - time to work on a few musical endeavors. I’m grateful for this opportunity to renew mind, body, and soul. I’m in conversation with my Jesuit superiors to determine in which Jesuit community I’ll be based for those months, and I’ll keep you posted.   

I certainly feel some sadness to leave St. Raphael, but I’m also excited about the possibilities for the future of the parish with Fr. Tom as pastor.  I’ve been reflecting during First Communions this spring that many of these young people were not yet born when I arrived in Raleigh!  There have been many joys and many challenges in these last eight years.  God, who as St. Ignatius says, “labors in all things” for us, has been present and faithful in it all.

Some things I’ve done as pastor were done well. Some things I could have done better - and I hope I will learn from them for my future missions as a Jesuit and a priest.  For the good accomplished, I’m thankful to God.  For the ways I’ve failed you, I ask your pardon and your prayers.

I’m grateful to all of you for your love and support, and the energy with which you’ve sought to work together these years to help people encounter Jesus, be formed as his disciples, and live out his mission by their lives.  I look forward to hearing about all that God continues to do in and through St. Raphael in the years to come!

I would have liked to be present this coming weekend to visit with you before and after Masses, and also to first share this news with you in person at Mass.  But the timing has worked out such that all three of us Jesuits from St. Raphael will be traveling together to celebrate the ordination of new Jesuit priests in New York City this weekend.  I thought it was still important that you know this news as soon as possible, so I’m letting you know with this message today.

But I’ll be back and around before or after Masses the following weekend, June 18-19.  Also, the staff is kindly working on a parish-wide gathering after all Masses the weekend of June 25-26.  They will provide more details when plans are finalized.  So this is not goodbye quite yet -  I look forward to seeing you soon!

Hola San Rafael,

Le escribo para informarle que este verano terminaré mi tiempo como párroco aquí, recibiré mi próxima misión como jesuita y un nuevo pastor ha sido enviado a San Rafael.

Las razones de este cambio son dos. Una es cuidar mejor a San Rafael (lo que los jesuitas llamamos cura apostolica, cuidado del apostolado). Al mirar hacia el futuro como parroquia, el nuevo párroco traerá algunos dones y experiencia notables, diferentes a los míos, que pueden ser de particular ayuda para San Rafael en sus próximos pasos como parroquia. Otra razón es el cuidado de mí (lo que se llama cura personalis o cuidado de la persona, que también es uno de los valores ignacianos de San Rafael). Me han dado el don de servir como párroco durante ocho años, lo cual ha sido un tremendo privilegio y bendición. Pero la verdad sea dicha, los últimos años en particular han traído desafíos sin precedentes en el liderazgo, ¡y me vendría bien un poco de descanso! También espero tener más tiempo para pasar con mi familia. Les agradezco a todos nuevamente en particular por sus oraciones durante el año pasado por mi padre, quien continúa recuperándose bien de su lucha contra el cáncer.

Estoy seguro que tienen muchas preguntas, sobre todo estos cambios, "¿Quién será nuestro próximo párroco?" Me complace informarles que el Padre Tomás Simisky, SJ comenzará como nuevo párroco el 30 de junio de 2022. Muchos de ustedes recordarán al Padre Tomás de los tres meses que pasó ayudando en San Rafael el verano pasado. Sé, por el tiempo que trabajé con él, que su enseñanza, liderazgo y experiencias globales serán un beneficio para San Rafael a medida que avanza, siguiendo a Jesús como sus discípulos apasionados. Estoy emocionado de ver cómo Dios trabaja a través de él como su próximo pastor. Parece que el Padre Tomás y yo tendremos la oportunidad de pasar la última semana de junio en el campus, para trabajar juntos y lograr una transición fácil. Puede encontrar una biografía más detallada del Padre Tomás, y un mensaje de él aquí. 

Mi próxima misión a largo plazo como jesuita aún está por determinarse. Parece que durante los primeros seis meses del año ‘22-23, tendré un tiempo sabático para descansar, para oración y reflexión más prolongada y tranquila, para hacer un trabajo pastoral directo ayudando en parroquias y casas de retiro, y para trabajar en algunos otros proyectos, incluido tal vez - emocionante para mí - tiempo para trabajar en algunos proyectos musicales. Estoy agradecido por esta oportunidad de renovar mente, cuerpo y alma. Estoy en conversaciones con mis superiores jesuitas para determinar en qué comunidad jesuita estaré basado durante esos meses, y los mantendré informados.

Ciertamente siento algo de tristeza por dejar San Rafael, pero también estoy entusiasmado con las posibilidades para el futuro de la parroquia con el Padre Tomás como párroco. ¡He estado reflexionando durante las Primeras Comuniones esta primavera que muchos de estos jóvenes aún no habían nacido cuando llegué a Raleigh! Han sido muchas alegrías y muchos retos en estos últimos ocho años. Dios, que como dice San Ignacio, “trabaja en todo” por nosotros, ha estado presente y fiel en todo.

Algunas cosas que he hecho como párroco las hice bien. Algunas cosas las podría haber hecho mejor, y espero aprender de ellas para mis futuras misiones como jesuita y sacerdote. Por el bien realizado, doy gracias a Dios. Por las formas en que les he fallado, les pido perdón y sus oraciones.

Estoy agradecido con todos ustedes por su amor y apoyo, y la energía con la que han buscado trabajar juntos estos años para ayudar a las personas a encontrar a Jesús, formarse como sus discípulos y vivir su misión con sus vidas. ¡Espero escuchar acerca de todo lo que Dios continúa haciendo en y a través de San Rafael en los años venideros!

Me hubiera gustado estar presente el próximo fin de semana para visitarlos antes y después de las misas, y también para compartir primero esta noticia con ustedes en persona en las Misa. Pero el momento resultó tal que los tres jesuitas de San Rafael viajarán juntos para celebrar la ordenación de nuevos sacerdotes jesuitas en la ciudad de Nueva York este fin de semana. Pensé que aún era importante que supieran esta noticia lo antes posible, así que les dejé saber con este mensaje hoy.

Pero estaré de regreso antes o después de las Misas el próximo fin de semana, 18 y 19 de junio. Además, el personal está trabajando amablemente en una reunión de toda la parroquia después de todas las Misas el fin de semana del 25 al 26 de junio. Proporcionarán más detalles cuando se finalicen los planes. Así que esto todavía no es un adiós. ¡Espero verlos pronto!
