Dear St. Raphael parishioners, 

Since accepting the interim role of Team Leader for the Worship and Sacraments Team of our church staff, Rafael Guarnizo and the other members of his team have met regularly with the members of the Church Executive Team (CXT) to reassess the priorities and tasks of that team. As a result of those conversations, they made a decision that the Worship and Sacraments Team will solely focus on the planning and execution of liturgies and the accompanying music. To better reflect this role, the team name has been changed to Liturgy and Music Team (LMT).

Also as a result of these conversations, Rafael decided to focus on enhancing music for our liturgies, both English and Spanish, and has accepted the role of Music Director, effective immediately. The members of the CXT - Mickey McGoldrick, Leo Moreda, and Maureen Mullally - and I are grateful to Rafael for his leadership of the Worship and Sacraments Team over the past 6 months and for his willingness to honestly share share his thoughts about both the team leader role and his team’s responsibilities. Beginning with moving Mass back into the church from Ignatius Hall in his first few days as the interim team leader, he successfully led our liturgical efforts through our two busiest seasons and the continuing uncertainty of the pandemic - all with a smile on his face and an accepting servant’s spirit. 

Because of his liturgical knowledge and experience planning liturgies, the members of the CXT recommended that I ask Fr. Larry Searles, SJ to be the Liturgy and Music Team leader and I accepted their recommendation. I’ve also asked Fr. Larry to join the CXT. I believe his experience, knowledge of liturgy, and strategic, big picture thinking will be assets to that team. Having Fr. Larry on the CXT also ensures there is representation from all church staff teams on the CXT. I’m pleased to announce that he’s accepted both roles, effective immediately. 

The Liturgy and Music Team is responsible for planning and execution of all Masses and liturgies, funerals, weddings, and quinceañaras; RCIA; providing opportunities for the sacrament of reconciliation and for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament;, and ongoing support and formation of liturgical ministers, musicians, members of our choirs, and our funeral and wedding teams.  

The Catholic Life Team is responsible for preparation for the sacraments of Baptism, First Reconciliation, First Eucharist, and Confirmation. 

The members of the CXT and I want to thank Rafael again for his leadership, honesty, and willingness to not only try something new but to put the thought and time in to make things better for our parish. We’re extremely grateful for the opportunity we had to work with him as the interim Worship and Sacrament Team leader and look forward to the great things he will do for our parish as our new Music Director. 

And, I'm grateful to Fr. Larry for his willingness to share his experience and expertise and look forward to working with him more closely both as the Liturgy and Music Team Leader and on the CXT.

Querida comunidad de San Rafael,

Desde que aceptó el rol interino de Líder de Equipo para el Equipo de Adoración y Sacramentos del personal de nuestra iglesia, Rafael Guarnizo y los otros miembros de su equipo se reunieron regularmente con los miembros del Equipo Ejecutivo de la Iglesia para reevaluar las prioridades y tareas de ese equipo. Como resultado de esas conversaciones, se tomó la decisión de que el Equipo de Adoración y Sacramentos se enfocará únicamente en la planificación y ejecución de las liturgias y la música que las acompaña. Para reflejar mejor este papel, el nombre del equipo se ha cambiado a Equipo de Liturgia y Música.

También como resultado de esas conversaciones, Rafael decidió enfocarse en mejorar la música para nuestras liturgias, tanto en inglés como en español, y aceptó el cargo de Director Musical, con efecto inmediato. Los miembros del Equipo Ejecutivo de la Iglesia, Mickey McGoldrick, Leo Moreda y Maureen Mullally, y yo estamos agradecidos con Rafael por su liderazgo en el Equipo de Adoración y Sacramentos durante los últimos 6 meses y por su disposición a compartir honestamente sus pensamientos sobre el papel de líder de ese equipo y las responsabilidades de sus miembros. Rafael, desde sus primeros días como líder interino del equipo, ayudó en la planeación del regreso de la Misa del Salon Ignacio hacia el templo, y luego dirigió con éxito nuestra preparaciones litúrgicas durante las temporadas de Adviento y Cuaresma; todo en medio de la continua incertidumbre de la pandemia, y siempre con una sonrisa en su rostro y un espíritu de servicio.

Asimismo, acepté la recomendación del Equipo Ejecutivo de la Iglesia de pedir al Padre Larry el ser líder del Equipo de Liturgia y Música dados su conocimiento litúrgico y su experiencia en la planificación de liturgias. También le pregunté al Padre Larry si quería formar parte del Equipo Ejecutivo de la Iglesia. Pienso que su experiencia, conocimiento de la liturgia y su pensamiento estratégico en general serán de mucho beneficio para ese equipo. Tener al Padre Larry en el Equipo Ejecutivo de la Iglesia también asegura que haya representación de todos los equipos del personal de la iglesia en el Equipo Ejecutivo de la Iglesia. Me complace anunciar que él ha aceptado ambos roles, con efecto inmediato.

El Equipo de Liturgia y Música es responsable de la planificación y ejecución de todas las Misas y liturgias, funerales, bodas y quinceañeras; RICA; brindar oportunidades para el sacramento de la reconciliación y para la Adoración del Santísimo Sacramento; y el apoyo continuo y formación de ministros litúrgicos, músicos, miembros del coro y nuestros equipos de funerales y bodas.

El Equipo de Vida Católica es responsable de la preparación para los sacramentos del Bautismo, Primera Reconciliación, Primera Comunión, y Confirmación.

Los miembros del Equipo Ejecutivo de la Iglesia y yo queremos agradecer nuevamente a Rafael por su liderazgo, honestidad y voluntad no solo de probar algo nuevo, sino también de dedicar tiempo y pensamiento para mejorar nuestra parroquia. Estamos extremadamente agradecidos por la oportunidad que tuvimos de trabajar con él como líder interino del Equipo de Adoración y Sacramentos y esperamos grandes cosas de él para nuestra parroquia como nuestro nuevo Director Musical.

Finalmente, estoy agradecido con el Padre Larry por su voluntad de compartir su experiencia y pericia y espero trabajar con él más de cerca como líder del equipo de liturgia y música y en el Equipo Ejecutivo de la Iglesia.
