Day of the Dead altars or Ofrendas are made as a way of remembering and honoring deceased friends and family. The altars help guide the spirits back to the land of the living on the “noche de muertos” or the night of November 2, All Souls Day.

Incense, flowers, candles, water, and food are left out to lead the dead to the altar and their waiting families, who spend the night in the graveyard singing, playing music, eating, drinking, and remembering. 

There are 6 items that are on every altar or Ofrenda which include:

Skulls
Probably one of the most recognizable symbols of Día de los Muertos, these skulls are often made of granulated sugar, meringue powder and water. The mixture is molded into the shape of a skull, and then decorated with brightly colored ornamentation. The skulls represent the people who have passed and who are receiving offerings at the altar. The sugar symbolizes the sweetness of life.

Marigolds 
Often referred to as “flowers of the dead” (flor de muerto), it’s believed that the scent of these bright orange blooms help attract souls to the altar.

Perforated Paper
Many people opt to go the easy route and purchase pre-made versions of this intricately cut tissue paper. The holes allow a way for souls to travel through and visit. It’s also believed that the delicate nature of the paper is symbolic of the fragility of life.

Bread of the Dead
This soft and sweet bread is designed with a circle and limbs to mimic the shape of a skull and crossbones and is finished with a dusting of sugar. It’s just one of a number of food items placed at altars for hungry souls to partake in.

Salt 
Salt is also said to help quench the thirst of souls. The salt is set out in the pattern of a cross so that the soul won’t be corrupted, and helps purify them.

Photographs 
Photos placed on an altar are always of someone who is deceased. Otherwise, they won’t be drawn to the altar and can’t cross over the bridge and will be forgotten. 
 Sometimes personal items of the remembered are also included on the altar.

There are usually 3 tiers to the Altar, which represent heaven, purgatory and earth. On the top tier you place God, angels and saints. On the middle and bottom tiers you add the items mentioned above. The altar or Ofrenda usually stays up for 9 days to pray a “novena” in honor of the souls of all the deceased resting in peace.

Los altares, ayudan a guiar a los espíritus de vuelta a la tierra de los vivos en la “noche de muertos” del 2 de noviembre. (Día de todas las almas o Día de todos los difuntos).

Calaveras

La mezcla se moldea en forma de cráneo y luego se decora con adornos de colores brillantes. Las calaveras representan a las personas que han pasado y que están recibiendo ofrendas en el altar. El azúcar simboliza la dulzura de la vida.

Cempasúchil
A menudo conocidas como "flores de los muertos". Se cree que el aroma de estas brillantes flores de color naranja ayuda a atraer a las almas al altar.

Papel Picado
Muchas personas optan por seguir la ruta más fácil y comprar versiones prefabricadas de este papel de seda intrincadamente cortado. Los agujeros permiten que las almas viajen y visiten. También se cree que la naturaleza delicada del papel es simbólica de la fragilidad de la vida.

Pan de Muertos
Este pan suave y dulce está diseñado con un círculo para imitar la forma de un cráneo y huesos cruzados y está terminado con un polvo de azúcar. Es solo uno de una serie de alimentos colocados en los altares para que las almas hambrientas participaran.

Sal
También se dice que la sal ayuda a saciar la sed de las almas. La sal se coloca en el patrón de una cruz para que el alma no se corrompa y ayude a purificarla.

Fotografías
Las fotos colocadas en un altar son siempre de alguien que ha fallecido. De lo contrario, no serán atraídos al altar y no podrán cruzar el puente y serán olvidados. Algunas veces se incluyen artículos que a la persona le gustaban.

Generalmente hay 3 niveles en el altar, que representa el cielo, el purgatorio, y la tierra. En el nivel superior colocas a Dios, los ángeles y a los santos. En los niveles medio e inferior se añaden los elementos mencionados anteriormente. El altar u Ofrenda suele permanecer durante 9 días para rezar una "novena" en honor de las almas de todos los difuntos que descansan en paz.
